Ever been to a madison? Well now is the time, The Brunswick Cycling Club is organising a madison for Tuesday 22nd September 9pm at DISC - the velodrome at John Cain Memorial Park, Darebin Rd, Thornbury, Melway 31 A7. The madison is a crazy high speed all in race - and an awesome event to see.
The Cycling Club meet prior (hence the late start time) with the pros doing their thing in the Madison at 9pm. Spot prizes and Padre Coffee on site - all welcome. Come along early if you want to see the club training.
Madison Teams of two riders race for about 40km. The team that covers the most distance after the 40km wins. There are sprints every 5km, with points awarded to 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 4th. If two teams are on the same distance (ie # of laps) then the total points decide the result.
Only one rider in each team is in the race at any time. That rider will do one or two laps and then change with their partner. In the change, the rider leaving the race will 'sling' their partner up to full speed. The changes are exciting and make for very interesting racing. Also, since each rider gets a brief rest, the overall pace of the race is kept very high.
